2018 – Outdoor/Adventure

Bay Camp and Fishing Camp

Bay Camp & Fishing Camp logo

Perched on stilts above a salt marsh, the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center is your introduction to the ecology of the San Francisco Bay Estuary.  We offer many weeks of summer day camp, to allow kids of every age to explore and experience the shoreline.  Our camps fall into two categories, Bay Camp and Fishing Camp.

BAY CAMP 2018
Get up close and personal with the bayshore’s birds, plants, bugs, and other crawly critters.  Ask your family to drop you off mornings at the shoreline for five days of salt marsh madness.  Meet birds and bugs, search for life in the mud, play games, go on a scientific voyage of discovery, and learn why the Shoreline is such an important place.

FISHING CAMP 2018
Calling all anglers!  Our shoreline is home to many unique fish; come out and join us as we catch (and release) some of them.  Over five days learn about the basics of fishing (knot-tying, casting, landing a catch, etc.).  We will also learn about the diversity of life off our coast through crafts, hands-on exploration, and much more.  Be prepared to get a little muddy.  All fishing equipment provided.

Deer Crossing Camp

Deer Crossing Camp logo

Since 1983, Deer Crossing Camp has provided an outdoor adventure for active 8–17 year olds in Eldorado National Forest near Lake Tahoe.  Deer Crossing stands out from other summer camps due to our emphasis on skill building and wilderness safety, our focus on developing resilient youth, and our no-road, off-the-grid location (where campers hike in and all gear is boated in).  Beginner to advanced classes in canoeing, windsurfing, rock-climbing, sailing, kayaking, and technical tree-climbing.  Other activities include archery, backpacking, orienteering, guitar, and improv comedy.

This is a true wilderness facility, with a two-story lodge and platform tents.  Access is by boat or trail (hiking); there is no road to camp.  We use generators to provide limited electricity and satellite phones for emergency communications.  Our neighbors are bald eagles, marmots, chipmunks, trout, and deer.  Our High Sierra mountain location at 6400 ft elevation boasts great winds for sailing and windsurfing, real granite climbing walls from beginner to advanced, and beautiful sunsets.

Camp runs 6/17/18–8/11/18 in two-week sessions; limited one-week slots available for new, younger campers.  Outstanding outdoor leadership programs for teens ages 14-17.

Tree Frog Treks

Tree Frog Treks logo

Campers at Tree Frog Treks Summer Camp are the most excellent explorers!

Each camper builds a special connection to nature with the help of his or her expert naturalists as they discover the world through science together.  Campers spend every day outdoors, rain or shine, seeking out natural spaces and the living things that make them their home.

During each camp session, campers will meet rescued reptiles, do wild experiments and build leadership and critical thinking skills through adventuring in nature with peers and instructors.

Come meet Blondie the Burmese Python, Ivan the African Spur Thigh Tortoise, Squiggles the Asian Water Dragon and Stickum the White’s Tree Frog.  We play games and tell stories to bring many unseen aspects of our urban habitat to life for our campers and their families.  We Wander and Wonder Together!
