There will also be research tables with material from Heat Watch, Misssey, Modern Slavery & Awareness Project, and City of Alameda Task Force.

Readers Theater:  Speaking A Woman’s Life

Come hear a dramatic journey into the psychological country of women, which will feature readings from women writers breaking silence about their age, color and sense of self.

This premier performance is an original audience participation production created by AAUW branch member and author Kathleen Cha. The piece stars branch members taking on the voices of women from around the world through reading selections from a broad range of women writers.

Award-Winning ‘ Roominate’ STEM Toy for Girls

An award-winning line of complete building sets designed for girls, Roominate was developed by Stanford engineering grads Alice Brooks and Bettina Chen in 2012 to help bridge the gender gap in STEM.

To date, Roominate has picked up multiple awards for its gender-bending, building toys, including Forbes “Top 10 Toys to Watch in 2015,” TIME “Toy of the Year” and the 2015 TOTY Finalist.

Roominate consists of 12 sets, some for 6 years and up, and others for 8 years and up. Children can build interactive sets like a school bus, amusement park and many more that come to life through the use of things like motors and lights.

Interactive apps also allows kids to remotely control motors and lights and get design ideas from fellow players (or “Roominaters”).

She will speak about  her books and about her experiences as a woman working in a scientific field.

About the Author:  Alison Gopnik is a professor of psychology and affiliate professor of philosophy at UC Berkeley.   Among the books she has authored are:  The Scientist in the Crib, How Babies Think, and The Philosophical Baby.

STEM Panel Presentation – From College to Career

Join us with co-host Holy Names High School for a session that explores routes from college to a successful career in a STEM field.

The panel will discuss their backgrounds, what it’s like for a young woman to work in STEM fields today, what they wish they had known as students, and their advice for the next generation of STEM career women.

Among our panelists will be young women early in their careers as:
• a biofuels researcher from the Joint BioEnergy Institute
• a software engineer from Google
• a manager at Black Girls CODE
• a representative from GoldieBlox

Panel moderator:  Linda Kekelis is an AAUW Oakland-Piedmont branch member and CEO of Techbridge, an organization that inspires girls to discover a passion for technology, science and engineering.

Who should attend:  This program is for middle school, high school and community college students, as well as their parents, teachers and mentors.
