• Listen to AAUW Fellow Je’Nen Chastain, a leader in the field of architecture, talk about her focus on the intersection of design and business strategy.

On International Women’s Day, March 8th:  Women and our allies will mark the day by recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system, while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity.

You can join A Day Without A Woman on March 8th in one or all of the following ways:

1. Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor;
2. Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
3. Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman.

Every ten days for one hundred days The Women’s March will announce an action that you can participate in to mobilize and demand that our elected officials hear our voices.

Social Media Boot Camp

Few of us can escape social media, most of us have tried it and many of us can’t live without it.  In the right hands, it can expand our social networks, advance our careers, help our organizations grow and be a megaphone for nonprofits to reach their communities.

Suzanne Frew, a specialist in social media communications for community leaders, will conduct this session.

By the conclusion of this workshop:  participants will understand the challenges and trends of social media, know how to use social media platforms and applications, understand the basics of message development and online outreach, and have practical knowledge on how to best use use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

To ensure individualized instruction and hands-on training:  the workshop is limited to 20 persons.  Participants must have open accounts for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, and bring their own laptop or tablet.  If you don’t yet have these accounts, come at 8:30am to set yours up.

Meet us at Madison Park in Oakland at 10 a.m.  At 11am, the march will begin up Oak Street to Grand Street along Lake Merritt, then continue on Broadway to end at Frank Ogawa Plaza.   At 12:30 p.m, the rally will start, with speakers, art & music concluding at 3 p.m.

Opening Doors Through Social Media

Social media has made an enormous impact on society, with positive and negative effects — you need only reflect on the recent Presidential election to see the measure of its influence.

As it’s now a case of managing social media or its managing us, Suzanne Frew’s introductory lecture is not to be missed!

Topics will include:

     *  What are the strengths and weaknesses of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram?
     *  How can social media be a megaphone for nonprofits to reach their communities?
     *  Can online networking help you meet new people, launch a job search or see your organization grow?

There will also be a question/answer session to explore areas of specific interest.

Julia Morgan’s Chapel of the Chimes’ Cloister

Following a short business meeting and a welcome to our new branch officers, we will have a presentation by Julia Morgan impersonator Betty Marvin.

A tour of the Chapel of the Chimes will follow with a focus on the art and architecture that Julia Morgan brought to Oakland.
